Privacy Policy

The short version. Ordinary study progress stays in your browser unless you choose account sync. Optional cloud, classroom, payment and AI features send the information needed for that feature to the services described below. There are no ads, trackers or analytics, and we do not sell your information.
Using ScienceQuiz.org without an account
By default, nothing you do here leaves your device. Scores, streaks, badges, quiz history, and which words or elements you have missed are kept in your browser’s local storage. We cannot read that data, and it disappears if you clear your browser’s site data or use the “Reset progress” link at the bottom of the site.
If you create an account
An account is optional. It exists so one learner’s progress can follow them between devices. If you create one, we hold:
- Your email address, and a display name if you provide one.
- If you sign in with Google: your name, email address, and profile picture, as supplied by Google. We never receive your Google password.
- Your learning progress — the same scores, streaks, badges, and review records described above.
Accounts and progress are stored using Google Firebase Authentication and Cloud Firestore, operated by Google LLC on our behalf. We use this information only to show you your own progress. We do not use it to advertise to you, and we do not build a profile of you for any other purpose.
Kid profiles
A parent can add up to four kid profiles to their account so each child keeps their own progress. A kid profile holds only what the parent types - a first name or nickname - a picture chosen from a fixed set, and that child’s learning progress. Children never create an account, and we never ask a child for an email address, a last name, or anything else about them. Profiles are stored with the parent’s account, and deleting a profile deletes its progress.
The parent area is protected by a four-digit parent PIN, which we store only in a salted, hashed form.
If you subscribe to ScienceQuiz Pro
Subscriptions are paid through Stripe, Inc. Stripe collects your card details on its own page; ScienceQuiz never receives or stores your card number. We keep only what we need to know whether an account is subscribed: a Stripe customer ID, the plan, its status, and its renewal date. We pass your account email to Stripe so it can send receipts. Stripe’s handling of payment data is governed by the Stripe Privacy Policy.
Optional AI study tools and family credits
Submitting an available AI creation, homework scan or answer check sends the chosen notes, document, picture, study question or answer through our server to OpenRouter and its selected model providers, which can include OpenAI and Anthropic. When available, audio and generated-picture features use OpenAI directly. Picture creation sends the card question and answer; it does not send the whole source document. Only submit material you have permission to use, and leave out names and other personal information. Ordinary study and reusing a saved picture do not call an AI provider.
We keep a shared credit balance under the adult account, payment references, request identifiers, and credit-use counts by learner profile ID. The credit ledger does not contain source notes or a child’s name. Request results and input hashes are retained for up to 24 hours for retries and review; material you explicitly save stays in your study library. Creation drafts may also stay in that profile’s browser session for up to 24 hours. Original uploaded files and recordings are not included in that browser resume record.
Generated pictures are stored in Google Cloud Storage under an unlisted picture link. Anyone who has that link can view the picture, including people with whom you share its study set. Private source notes are not attached to the picture. Contact us to remove a saved picture. Source processing by OpenAI is also subject to its privacy policy and applicable API data controls.
Credit purchases use Stripe Checkout. Children cannot open a credit checkout; the account owner confirms their account sign-in first. Payment and credit records are retained to reconcile purchases, prevent duplicate charges or credits, and handle payment reversals.
A homework scan can optionally contribute its generated practice questions to the site owner’s review queue for up to 90 days. The option starts selected for a parent and unselected for a child. Photos, original files, account IDs and learner-profile IDs are not attached to that queue. A person must approve the questions before they can be added to shared study material. Raw scan files are processed in memory and are not included in saved jobs or browser resume records. OpenRouter’s handling of submitted material is described in its privacy policy; selected model providers also apply their data policies.
Gifts of Pro, and free Pro for students
Anyone can gift years of ScienceQuiz Pro, and teachers and counselors can ask for free Pro for students who cannot pay. We built it to hold as little as possible, and nothing in it is about a child.
- If you gift a year: you pay through Stripe and do not need an account. We keep only that a payment for a number of years was received (Stripe’s session number and the number of years). We do not keep your name, your email address or any link to whoever receives it. If you type an email address, it goes to Stripe alone, so Stripe can send your receipt.
- If you are a teacher or counselor asking for Pro: you sign in first. We keep your own name, school email address, school name, the number of students you are asking for, an optional one-sentence note, and your account ID, so we can answer you. We never ask for, and you should never send, a student’s name or any detail about a student. A person reads each request and decides; nothing is approved automatically.
- If you use a code: we record on your account that it has Pro until a date, and mark the code as used, with your account ID. Codes are stored only as a one-way hash, so we cannot read one back.
Whether an account received a free year is not shown to anyone else, and there is no list of recipients on the site. You can ask us to delete a request or a code record at any time by emailing support@sciencequiz.org.
What we do not do
- We do not show advertising of any kind.
- We do not run analytics, tracking pixels, or third-party trackers. The application is built to emit no analytics events at all.
- We do not sell, rent, or trade personal information, and we do not share it with anyone for their own purposes.
Other services this site touches
- Google Firebase Hosting serves the site. Like any web host, its servers receive your IP address and browser type as part of delivering the page.
- Google Fonts supplies the two typefaces the site uses. Loading them sends your IP address to Google’s font servers.
- Google Firebase Authentication and Cloud Firestore store account and progress data, and only if you create an account.
- Google Cloud Functions start a Stripe checkout, record subscription status, and handle gifts, requests for free Pro and codes, and only if you use one of those.
- Stripe processes subscriptions, credit purchases and gift payments when you choose them.
- OpenRouter and its selected model providers process material you explicitly submit to available AI creation, scanning and answer-feedback tools. OpenAI also processes available direct audio and picture-generation requests.
- Google Cloud Storage stores generated study pictures and serves their unlisted links.
Google’s handling of that data is governed by the Google Privacy Policy.
Children
ScienceQuiz.org is built for students, including children. That is exactly why it works with no account, no advertising, and no tracking — a child can use every part of it without any personal information being collected.
Accounts are for adults. A child uses ScienceQuiz either with no account at all, or through a kid profile a parent adds to their own account, which requires no information from the child. If you believe a child has created an account without permission, email us at the address below and we will delete it and its data.
Removing your data
- Local progress: use “Reset progress” at the bottom of the site, or clear your browser’s data for this site.
- Account and stored progress: email support@sciencequiz.org from the address on the account and we will delete it. We aim to do this within 30 days.
You may also ask us what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask for a copy, using the same address.
Keeping it safe
The site is served over HTTPS, and account data is held in Google Cloud infrastructure with access limited to the site’s operator. No system is perfect, and we will tell affected users promptly if we ever learn of a breach involving personal information.
How long we keep things
Account and progress data is kept while the account exists. Local progress lives in your browser until you clear it. AI request results expire after 24 hours. Saved study material and pictures remain until removed; payment, credit and request-reference records may be kept longer to reconcile balances and prevent duplicate fulfillment. Contact us about deleting account data and generated pictures.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, we will update the date at the top and, for account holders, say so by email.
